In Islam people use Islamic prayer beads for dikhr. Dikhr is a way of praying by reciting a holy phrase. Person has to repeat the prayer for the specific number and keeping the count on fingers can be slightly distracting and difficult. To avoid that people use these prayer beads sometimes also known as Muslim prayer beads. Usually they try and keep it in pocket or around their hand or someplace easily reachable so that it reminds them and generate a good habit of Dikhr.
Muslim prayer beads come in number of varieties. They are made of different types of precious and semi-precious stones and gems, they are made of different kinds of wood; they also come in metallic silver and many more. Many of them are known for their spiritual and meditational effects.
When you buy them you need to take care of them. Specially if it's made of gem stone or Silver. These prayer beads need specific but not so complicated care. It is suggested that you should keep them clean and safe. The thing is that gems and silvers needs cleaning process different from regular materials we use.
We will take them one by one; starting with silver as they are my personal favourite. Most of the precious metals have the tendency of oxidizing with time but it can be fine for long run if kept with proper care. Place your prayer beads at cool and dry place. Best way is to keep them in a cloth pouch. Proper spacing is also required it shouldn't be in contact with any other thing in order to avoid scratch, etc. one shouldn't use tissue paper or towel to clean it. Polishing cloth or felt is suitable for the purpose. Chlorinated water can really harm the product so make sure you by no chance use chlorinated water to clean your prayer beads.
Coming to gem stone; they also need to be cleaned by soft cloth before being kept or stored. They are not supposed to be in contact with perfume, chlorinated water, hair spray or any other chemical. With little care and proper handling you can use your Islamic prayer beads for years.
